Religious rituals

Christian
Angelus - a Catholic devotion which involves the reciting of three biblical verses alternating with the Hail Mary prayer. This is usually accompanied by the ringing of the Angelus bell to call followers to prayer. Claire hears the Angelus bells ringing in Le Havre (DIA, chapter 6)

Catholic Marriage Service - Jamie & Claire (Outlander, chapter 14)

Confession - Claire confesses her sins to Father Anselm at the Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupre (Outlander, chapter 4) Confession is an informal name for the Sacrament of Penance which is one of the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church.

Mass - the central act of worship in the Catholic Church

Matins - the monastic night-time worship ending at dawn. When Claire first meets Father Anselm at the Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupre she thinks he is going to Prime in Cross Stitch, but to Matins in Outlander (ch. 38)

Perpetual Adoration - a ritual carried out at the Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupre. (Outlander, chapter 38) The Blessed Sacrament on the altar in the chapel at the Abbey is never left untended. The Blessed Sacrament is considered to be the blood and body of Christ by Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches. For every hour of every day there is a person watching over the Blessed Sacrament and the monks take it in turns to watch. The basis for the ritual is that when Jesus was awaiting trial and crucifixion in the Garden of Gethsemane his disciples all fell asleep instead of being with him. The ritual of Perpetual Adoration aims to atone for that.

Prime - Prime is a fixed time of prayer said at the first hour of daylight, usually around 6am. When Claire first meets Father Anselm at the Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupre she thinks he is going to Prime in Cross Stitch, but to Matins in Outlander (ch. 38)

Sacrament of Extreme Unction - also known as the Last Annointing. This is a Catholic sacrament which is given to those who are very sick and at risk of dying and is one of the three sacraments that constitute the Last Rites. Jamie is given this sacrament at the Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupre. Father Anselm explains to Claire that the sacrament has two purposes - to heal the sufferer, and if that is not possible, to absolve them of their sins so their soul may depart in peace. (Outlander, chapter 39)

Vespers - the sunset evening prayer service. Claire hears the bells for Vespers ring when she is at L'Hopital des Anges (DIA, chapter 14)

Druid
Beltane stone circle dance - performed by Mrs Graham and her group of dancers (Outlander, chapter 2)

Pagan
Blood Vow - performed after Jamie & Claire's marriage ceremony, "Blood of my blood, bone of my bone ..." (Outlander, chapter 14)
